Ethics & Consent: Your Rights in the Room

Consent in this work is not a form you sign. It is the architecture of the whole evening — built before you arrive, load-bearing throughout, and the reason you can finally let your shoulders drop.

Informed means informed

Real consent requires real information: what the session includes, in plain words, before money changes hands. You should never discover the shape of your own booking on the table. A professional describes the arc of the session, names the parts that are optional, and prices the whole thing once — so the only surprises left are pleasant ones, like how good warm oil smells.

Consent also has a memory. What you agreed by message is what happens in the room; the session is not a negotiation that reopens under low light. If anything new is offered, it is offered as a question you can decline with a word, and declining changes nothing else about your evening.

Revocable, at any moment, for any reason

Your consent expires the moment you withdraw it — mid-sentence, mid-stroke, without explanation, apology, or refund anxiety. The professional response to 'stop' is immediate, warm, and final: hands still, a blanket offered, water brought, and absolutely no attempt to talk you back onto the table.

The same applies in miniature. 'Softer', 'slower', 'not there' are complete instructions. Notice how a therapist receives small corrections early in the session; that is exactly how they will receive a large one.

Privacy and professional distance

What happens in the room stays in the room. A professional does not discuss clients, does not share your details, does not photograph anything, and contacts you afterwards only in the ways you agreed. Your booking messages deserve the same discretion as medical correspondence.

And the relationship stays professional, however warm it feels. No personal socialising, no gifts with hooks in them, no late-night texting. The kindness of a good therapist is real — and it is bounded, because the boundary is what makes the kindness safe to enjoy.
