A Plain-Language Glossary

Every field hides behind its vocabulary. Here are the words you will meet while researching — translated into plain English, including the euphemisms, so nothing about your booking is lost in translation.

The core words

Yoni — Sanskrit for womb/sacred place; in this field, a respectful term for the vulva and female genitals. Tantra / tantric — traditions linking breath, sensation and spirituality; in modern practice, shorthand for slow, breath-led, unhurried touch. Draping — the sheet or towel technique that keeps uncovered only the area being worked on. Aftercare — the wind-down: rest, water, warmth, and a kind follow-up.

LMT — Licensed Massage Therapist (state-licensed; verifiable). Bodywork — the umbrella term for hands-on practices, broader and less regulated than 'massage therapy'. Intake — the questions and forms before a first session. Contraindication — a reason to modify or postpone a session: a healing injury, a medication, a stage of pregnancy.

Session vocabulary

Swedish / deep tissue — the conventional massage styles most sessions start from: flowing strokes, or firmer pressure into muscle. Four-hand — two therapists working in synchrony; intense, enveloping, and priced accordingly. Outcall — the therapist travels to you (hotel or home); incall — you go to their studio. Each has safety implications worth a question.

Boundary menu — the list, agreed in advance, of what is in and out of your session. Safe word / stop signal — in this gentle work usually just your voice, but agreeing on one beforehand is never wasted. Grounding — the slow return at the end: blanket, water, a few quiet minutes before the world resumes.

Euphemisms, decoded

Some vocabulary exists to obscure. 'Full service', 'extras', 'happy ending' — these are not bodywork terms; they signal a sexual service wearing massage's clothes, with none of this guide's safety architecture. 'Sensual massage' sits in between and means different things to different advertisers, which is precisely why the twelve questions matter more than any label.

Judge every term by whether it survives a plain follow-up question. Professionals translate their own jargon happily. Anyone who prefers the fog is telling you where they live.
